We rarely think about our trash after it leaves the door. The garbage collector takes it, and that’s the end of the story for us. But our waste has a much longer life — and a much bigger footprint — than most of us realise.
The numbers will surprise you
A typical urban Indian family of four produces about 1.5 to 2 kg of waste per day. That’s roughly 600–700 kg per year, per family. Multiply that across India’s 300 million-plus households, and we’re looking at over 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually.
To put that in perspective: it’s enough to fill Wankhede Stadium more than 50 times.
What’s actually in your dustbin?
Studies of Indian household waste consistently show the same pattern:
- 50–60% wet waste — kitchen scraps, food leftovers, garden trimmings
- 20–25% dry recyclables — paper, plastic, glass, metal
- 10–15% sanitary and mixed waste — diapers, sanitary products, contaminated items
- 5–10% hazardous and e-waste — batteries, bulbs, old electronics
The biggest category — by a wide margin — is wet waste. And it’s also the easiest to fix.
Why this matters
Most Indian cities have landfills that were designed for a fraction of what they now receive. Bengaluru’s Mandur, Delhi’s Ghazipur, Mumbai’s Deonar — these have become hills of garbage taller than apartment buildings, leaching toxins into groundwater and catching fire in summer.
Over half of what we send to these landfills shouldn’t be there at all. Wet waste belongs in a compost bin, not buried under plastic for centuries.
What you can do today
- Weigh your wet waste for one week. Awareness is the first step.
- Separate at source — keep two bins in the kitchen.
- Compost what you can. A home composter handles almost all wet waste from a family of four.
The average Indian family is producing more waste than ever before. But we also have more tools than ever to deal with it sensibly. The dustbin is no longer a one-way road.
